The Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers was established in April 1975. Adhered to the principle of “love the country and Hong Kong” and the spirit of “gathering professionals and serving fellows”, she advances Hong Kong’s education development with a rational and pragmatic attitude. The President of the 19th Council of the Federation is Mr. Wong Kwan Yu and the Chairman is Mr. Wong Kam Leung. The Federation services all the teachers and schools in Hong Kong. Currently, the total number of members exceeds 42,000, which covers more than 2,000 tertiary institutions, secondary schools, primary schools, kindergartens, and special schools.
Over the years, the Federation has carried out a number of brand activities, including “Teacher’s Sports Day”, “Outstanding Teacher Competition”, etc. The “Teacher’s Sports Day” is a large-scale annual sports event in the education sector. It has been held since 2005 and has been well received by the sector since its launch. There are more than 1,500 participants joining the event each year. The Sports Day provides teachers with opportunities to relax and unwind. In order to gather professionals and encourage them to pursue excellence, the Federation has organized the “Outstanding Teacher Competition” since 2005. The “Prospective Teacher’s micro-teaching film Competition” has been held since 2015 so as to encourage prospective teachers who are about to embark their career in teaching. These two activities inject positive energy into the industry, enhance the professional image of teachers, and strengthen the atmosphere of respecting teachers.
In terms of professional support, the Federation holds a number of education-related seminars and organizes on-campus lectures for schools. The topics include e-learning, mediation skills, STEM education, health preservation from the Chinese medicine perspective, etc. The Federation also provides different types of professional support and organizes job interviews for prospective teachers and new teachers. Moreover, the Federation pays attention to the education development in Hong Kong, conducts investigations and studies on education issues, and publicly expresses opinions to improve quality of education.
In order to enhance the professional image of the Federation, “Education Profession” has been published since March 2019. The publications analyze popular education policies and publish schools and teachers’ interviews, which meet the needs of the education sector. The circulation of “Education Profession” is 30,000 copies per issue. They are distributed free of charge to all primary, secondary, and kindergarten teachers in Hong Kong and are widely received.
At the same time, the Federation provides different discounts, covering epidemic prevention products, tickets, catering, insurance, stationery, travel tours, and related products, as well as discounts on medical and health services, taking care of teachers’ daily needs. Members of the Federation can go to designated suppliers and present their membership cards to enjoy various benefits at a discounted price. The Federation also set up an online shopping platform providing delivery services. Therefore, members of the Federation can shop easily without leaving home.
For many years, the Federation has established a good relationship and mutual trust with the Ministry of National Education, and the education departments and unions of various provinces and cities in the Mainland, organizing numerous joint events. Meanwhile, the Federation has undertaken the “Sister School Scheme” of the Education Bureau since 2005, and relationship there has been established with more than 800 pairs of sister schools. The Scheme provides a platform to facilitate professional exchange between primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and the Mainland, and enhances mutual understanding and communication between the teachers, helping them to achieve advancement.
